In January 2008, I became the Assistant Dean of Technology at Cochise College. This position oversees one third of all academic departments at Cochise College. Prior to learning of this opening, I had already decided that administration would be a part of my future whether here at Cochise College or elsewhere. I had applied to and been accepted to the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona where my emphasis would be on leadership. Having been at Cochise for just two and a half years, my first step toward leadership would have to involve an internal discussion as to what if anything I had to offer this position. I decided to craft a vision for what I would do as Assistant Dean of Technology. This vision would outline my priorities and propose ways to satisfy those priorities. This would give the Deans on the interview panel (my future bosses) a clear understanding of my vision and allow them to reconcile their priorities with mine. I decided to emphasize the following five priorities.
1. Strengthen and Foster Community Relationships. 2. Community Outreach and Service. 3. Professional Development. 4. Instructional Quality. 5. Program Growth. After learning of my selection as Assistant Dean, my first task was to present this vision to my entire division. In my opinion, all leadership positions in any institution require this exercise. Not only did I properly communicate my priorities to my superiors but also those faculty and staff I would directly and indirectly supervise. Everything I do now as Assistant Dean involves my vision in some way. Each initiative I put forth, involves that vision. I created a vision that would last for at least the five years of my tenure and be broad enough to allow for all significant initiatives to fall under. I do not anticipate any changes to this vision over the next five years. All faculty and staff in our division know what I stand for and are completely informed as to my priorities as the leader of our division.
